After You Buy: Why Aftercare and Redesign Are Better with a Small Jeweller

Your jeweller should still know your piece years later. Why aftercare is more personal at a small studio, and how we reset your stones into a new design.

In short
  • The relationship with your jeweller doesn't end at delivery. Questions, adjustments and redesigns come later.
  • A small studio knows your piece and remembers your order. A big chain usually starts from scratch every time.
  • At Ray Diamonds, stones from a piece we made can be reset into a new design when your taste changes.

Most comparisons between jewellers stop at the moment you pay. But fine jewellery is meant to last for decades, and over that time you may want it cleaned, resized, or turned into something new. What happens then depends a lot on who you bought from.

After the sale at a big brand

Large brands often have formal exchange and buyback schemes, which can be useful. But day-to-day aftercare can feel impersonal:

  • You explain your piece and your history to whoever is at the counter.
  • Requests are processed through a central system with standard timelines.
  • Exchange schemes usually steer you towards whatever is currently in the catalogue.

After the sale at a small studio

With an independent jeweller, the people who designed your piece are the people you message afterwards. They have the CAD file, they know which stones went into it, and they remember the occasion it was made for. That makes changes simpler and more personal.

Redesign: give your stones a second life

Tastes change. Earrings bought for a wedding may sit in a locker for years; a pendant may feel too formal for everyday life. Instead of leaving those diamonds unused, Ray Diamonds offers a redesign service for pieces we've made:

  • A pair of 1-carat earrings can become a solitaire ring and a pendant.
  • A pendant can be reset into a ring, or into a different pendant on a chain.
  • Stones from several old pieces can be combined into one new design.

We take your stones back to reset them into a new design, not to buy them back. As with any commission, you get an approximate price and a CAD design to approve before work starts.

Why redesign makes financial sense

Laboratory-grown diamonds have little resale value, so selling an old piece rarely returns much. Redesigning keeps the value of the stones you already own and puts it into something you'll actually wear. You pay mainly for any new gold and the making, instead of buying all-new stones.

Looking after your jewellery

Laboratory-grown diamonds are as hard as mined diamonds, but every piece benefits from simple care:

  • Clean gently with warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush, then pat dry.
  • Take it off for heavy work, the gym, swimming pools and when applying lotions or perfume.
  • Store pieces separately in soft pouches, because diamonds can scratch other jewellery and each other.
  • Check prongs now and then. If a stone feels loose or catches on fabric, stop wearing it and get it checked.

Keep your documents

Store your IGI report, the invoice and the hallmark details together. They identify your stones and gold, and they make any future redesign or insurance claim much easier.

The real difference

A big brand sells you a piece. A small jeweller builds a relationship around it: designing it with you, answering your questions years later, and reshaping it when your life changes. That's what we mean when we say every Ray Diamonds piece is made for one person.

Quick answers

Can I reset diamonds from old jewellery into a new design?

At Ray Diamonds, yes, for pieces we made: we take the stones back and reset them into a new design. It is a redesign service, not a buyback.

How do I clean laboratory-grown diamond jewellery?

Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a soft toothbrush, then pat dry. Store pieces separately so they don't scratch each other.
