Certification

Proof you can check yourself.

A grading report is what turns "trust us" into something you can verify. Here is what yours will contain, who issues it, and how to confirm it in under two minutes.

In short
  • Every Ray Diamonds stone over 1 carat comes with a grading report from IGI, an independent laboratory. Smaller stones are certified on request.
  • Most of our stones are D colour, VVS1–VVS2 clarity.
  • The report states the stone is laboratory-grown, and lists its carat, colour, clarity and cut.
  • You can look up the report number on the lab's own website, and match it to the number laser-inscribed on the stone.

Who issues the report

Our stones are graded by the International Gemological Institute (IGI), an independent gemmological laboratory and one of the most widely used graders of laboratory-grown diamonds in India. IGI examines each stone and records what it finds; we don't write or edit the report.

The point of an outside lab is simple: the people selling the stone are not the people grading it.

What's on the report

Layouts differ between labs, but a laboratory-grown diamond report will show most of the following:

What a report showsIllustration
Report number
Unique to your stone. This is what you look up online.
Origin
A clear statement that the diamond is laboratory-grown.
Shape & cutting style
For example round brilliant, oval, pear, marquise.
Measurements
Length × width × depth in millimetres.
Carat weight
Weight, not size. 1 carat = 0.2 grams.
Colour
On a D (colourless) to Z scale.
Clarity
From FL / IF down through VVS, VS, SI and I.
Cut, polish, symmetry
How well the stone is proportioned and finished.
Fluorescence
How the stone reacts to UV light.
Growth method
Often CVD or HPHT, and whether there was post-growth treatment.
Inscription
The report number as laser-inscribed on the stone's edge (girdle).

Verify it in four steps

  1. Find the report number on the printed report or card.
  2. Go to IGI's own website (igi.org) and open its "Verify your report" page. Type the address yourself rather than following a link from anyone, including us.
  3. Enter the number and compare what comes up with your paper report: shape, measurements, carat and grades should all match.
  4. Check the inscription. Under a jeweller's loupe the same number is visible on the stone's girdle.

Red flags anywhere you shop: no report number; a report that doesn't say "laboratory-grown"; measurements that don't match the stone; or a seller who won't let you check the number yourself.

Don't forget the gold

The diamond report covers the stone. The metal has its own mark. In India, hallmarked gold jewellery carries three marks from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS):

You can check a HUID with the government's BIS CARE app ("Verify HUID"). Ask us for the hallmark details of your piece.

Common questions

Is every diamond in my piece certified?

Every stone over 1 carat comes with its own IGI report. Smaller stones can be certified too; just ask when you order.

What grades do you usually use?

Most of our stones are D colour with VVS1 to VVS2 clarity. Your IGI report shows the exact grades of your stone.

What do I see before I commission a piece?

An approximate price and a CAD design of the piece. Production starts only after you approve the design.
